Review of Labour Day Tournament ZTEC 2 : The Young & The Hopeful

Alas, labour day challenge has come and gone. To most labour day is a day of rest, however that cannot be said for the players of ZTEC 2 who gave their all in the battle of attempting that which might seemed distant to some, victory. ZTEC 2 played with all their hearts, holding nothing back giving every ounce of energy they had in them, they pushed themselves to the limit, giving everything they had, to the extent of facing injuries, fractured bones, bruises and aches. That did not stop them, ZTEC 2 continued to fight. This cannot be taught by any coach, any captain or anyone. This came from them and them alone, when they were behind they never gave up,chasing every loose ball, when they were tired fatigue seemed like a motivation for them to move faster. Where that spirit came from, no one knows. All we can say is.. THAT IS ZTEC !!.

ZTEC 2 played a number of matches, although they did not emerge victorious in every match, they are now examples even to the seniors. The one match that stood out from the whole tournament, was the match between ZTEC 2 vs NTU HURRICANES ( Singapore ) Ztec 2 down with only 5 players and one goalie, everyone was doubtful of ZTEC 2. Majority of the people assumed that it was going to be a blow out. That is when the ZTEC spirit came in, the juniors rose to the occasion, putting to shame many seniors in the floorball community in penang. It was then that many were proven wrong. NTU with experienced and national capped players were dumbfounded when they could not penetrate the defense, to get the ball in to the net. ZTEC 2 comprised of junior players with experience as short as only 5 months compaired to NTU, were only considered toddlers in floorball. There were many close calls, but ZTEC 2 tirelessly and amazingly held them back by chasing every ball and playing tightly as a team. Unfortunately, a goal was scored. Controversial but nonetheless a goal. ZTEC 2 kept their heads held high and managed to equalise from our very own young gun John Chia. Bringing the match neck and neck once again.

The final whistle sounds...

The crowd went wild with cheers of excitement and disbelief. It was then that the penalty shoot-outs began. NTU had the upper hand of having a goalie with experience and so to were their players who actually had trained to take penalties, but kudos to Suku AKA Chocolate for stepping up his game managing to save 1 shot out of 3 which gave hope to ZTEC 2 and everyone around them. Unfortunately, experience took over, Hurricanes final score was 2 goals to 1. But a job well done to captain of ZTEC 2 Kok Hui, who managed to salvage a goal during the shoot-outs.

ZTEC 2, in 2 days, when from zero's to heroes, frustrating opponents, scoring goals and having played as a TEAM, proving to the people out there that team work is as important as individual skill. They made history by playing against better and more experienced teams and not succumbing to the pressures and intimidation of more senior players. They stood their grounds, they played their game and they did it to the best of their abilities.

To, Kok Hui, Tashveen, Rishi, Syaza, John , Samuel, Teik Hong, Yong Ern, Gim Hoong and Suku AKA Chocolate ;). You people were awesome, keep ur heads up and keep the fire burning. 1..2..Whoosh!
