Friendly Against Minden Unihawks(18/10/09)

Unihawks 7 - 10 Ztec
(2-4), (2-0), (3-6)

This was the third meeting between this two clubs in 3 months. The first was in the league where Ztec clinch the title with a 18-1 victory. The 2nd, in the recent Rising Star challenge where Ztec came out on top again with a 2-0 win. However this time, it was a much much tighter game.

Unihawks boosted with the arrival of a few European players together with a Canadien player surely did make them a tougher team to play against. With their local players also being more experience now, it wasn't easy this time as it was back them in the league. The 18-1 scoreline was far from sight.

The game started rather fast with both teams on constant attacking. However it was Ztec that found the net first through Daniel Cheah. Unihawks equalized through their own Daniel before Ztec's Samuel Ong brought Ztec up again. At the end of the first period, it was 2-4 to Ztec with goals from Daniel and Jo-Wyee.

The 2nd period was totally dominated by Unihawks. They started off with a 100% press and really caught us off guard. Ztec kept trying to attack but was kept at bay by their on form goalie Dawn Tan. At the end of period 2, it was 2-0 to Unihawks.

Now with the score at 4-4, and Ztec starting the 3rd period with only 4 man because of their captain Ter Min being given a 2 minutes foul, Unihawks were looking to lead this match for the first time. This did not happen, Ter Min after coming out from the penatly bench immediately scored his first goal assisted by Jo-Wyee. Jo-Wyee made 4-6 before Unihawks scored 2 to equalize. With the score at 6-6, tension was rising. A penalty was given to Unihawks. Sarah stood up but failed to concede. The final score was 7-10 to Ztec with goals coming in from Adrian, Ter Min and a double from Jo-Wyee.

The friendly then ended with each teams taking 8 penalty shots. The final score of the penalty was 2-2. Brandon and Samuel was the only one to find the net.

Ztec would like to thank the following for making this friendly a success:

Wai Wai (Team manager of Unihawks for arranging this game)
Lin Ken and James( for refereeing)
Bryan Looi, Deswyn, Rooban Chand, Nicholas Ong and Previn(for being the secretariat)

News from USA: Oliver Cedric

Ztec has taken time to interview 2 of our players who are currently in USA. This is the interview between Ztec (Z) and Oliver Cedric (OC)

Z: How was your trip there and how are u settling down at the moment?

OC: The trip here was long and very tiring. It was a hassle transiting in so many different airports...! And, not to mention, I almost missed my connecting flight to Oklahoma from Chicago. Was stranded in Japan due to a delayed flight. But overall, the experience has thought me a lot. Flying so far from home for the first time and being alone, really gives you time with your thoughts. Overall, I had smooth flights throughout my journey... Ask Jeremy about his experience.. SCARY..!

Z:The league in penang has ended, how did u team 8cers performed in the league? Any words of encouragement to this team?

OC:The saddest thing about the league ending is exactly that, IT HAS ENDED! I had such a great time playing and competing that i dreaded the end of it. The league ending also meant it was close to my departure. So yeah, it was a sad thing that the league ended on all levels. 8cers were AWESOME! We went over our objective, we intended to score 50 goals throughout the league, and we beat that, so i would say we did very well. I'm seriously PROUD of you guys, we played as a team and we eventually won as a team.. And that, my friends, is the crucial factor of victory.! ONE TEAM, ONE PASSION! Keep it up people.. More to come..!!

Z: 33 goals out of the 53 goals has been scored between you, Jo Wyee and Ter Min. How do u think your absence will affect the attacking line?

OC: Well, Praise God that the I performed well and was able to contribute. I feel that the team will be able to press on. There is no doubt there. We are a team. And there is no single, star player in Ztec. Although I hope that i'll be missed (I REALLY HOPE SO GUYS! :P), I know in my heart that the members of Ztec will train to be the best that they can be, and they will cover my absence well. Who knows, there might be another "Oliver" lurking around in training. =] So Team, continue to train. Ter Min, Daniel Cheah and Jo Wyee, continue to coach them. And yes, Ztec will live on.!

Z:Who do you think was the best player in the league? (can be any position)

OC: Best Player....... me?? lol.. Nah.. Just kidding. Well
, as for best player in the team, I think it should go to Jeremy Yeap. His brilliant stunts, control and his dedication to lead the team with pointers and strategies have really inspired me to be a better player. I've played floorball for more than 5 years, and with Jeremy around, I still learn a lot. Stuff i never knew, and also stuff I THOUGHT i knew. So yes, in my book, Jerm should get best player for Ztec in this league.

Z: Lastly, any words of encouragement to the players in Ztec?

OC: Well, first and foremost, I just want to say that I miss you guys, and I miss training with you. It's not easy being thousands of miles away, not even having my floorball stick to even train (Dumb customs). But I will find a way to train and when I return, I shall hope to be at least a lil better. Jeremy is in the room beside mine, so i guess I can bug Him to train me every now and then. LOL! But seriously guys, I can honestly say that there is no team out there like Ztec, the bond we have in unbreakable, the spirit we have, uncrushable, the passion we have for the game, unspeakable, there are just no words to decribe Ztec, other than............ Family. You guys are the best. Keep in up and train your hardest. I've given some goals to reach to some of the players. And I hope you can reach them. This is to the entire Ztec. Play HARD, play SMART, and above all.... Have fun.. That's where our strength truly lies. We are GOOD individually, but we are GREAT together. So train your best, and play your best. I'll be cheering you on from here. Semangat Ztec, and God Bless...

Ztec wishes Oliver and Jeremy the best of luck in their future in the USA and hope to see them back soon.

News from USA: Jeremy Yeap

Ztec has taken time to interview 2 of our key players who are currently in the USA. This is an interview between Ztec (Z) and Jeremy Yeap (JY).

Z: How does it feel to be back in the USA?

JY: Mixed feelings. Good because I'm away from the haze and humidity. The air is fresher here. Bad because coming back means holidays are over and it's all back to study, work and more study!!! The worst is there's no more floorball and even if there is, it is mostly played by myself and perhaps together with my dog.

Z:The league in penang has ended, how did u team 8cers performed in the league? Any words of encouragement to this team?

JY:I think the team did a great job and we manage to hit all our targets and goals set for the league. However, I do believe that we could have done better if players could train together more and know each other's style of play more. Ztec might have won the league, but that's not something BIG to shoutout because Ztec will only and always be Ztec unless everyone train harder TOGETHER as a team and beat ourselves then only can we move up to the next level and make a difference in the floorball arena. Winning the league is a road block for the team. That's perhaps the furthest we can go. BUT, we can go beyond it if EVERONE in Ztec can work together by playing together as a unit and dare to be different than others. Thus, let us all go a distance together and be a history maker in floorball.

Z:7 goals conceded in 5 games for Ztec. How do u feel about this? Is it a good thing or a bad thing?

JY:Well, Coach Termin's target was 8 and my target for the team was 10. So, I guess we've hit our target. I felt that we did pretty well because we focused alot on scoring and many times we only played with one defender, but yes, we could have done better. simply because some of the goals conceded was really a give away goal by our defenders and goalkeeper. Those goals shouldn't have gone in at all, but crappy stuff does happen sometimes. Nevertheless, I would say it happened for a good cause for the team because it enabled the team to learn what not to do in the future. If mistakes wasn't done, then I believe there won't be any lesson to learn anymore.

Z: How far can this Ztec8cers team go in terms of achievements?

JY:Like I've said, winning the league could be a road block for the team because what more can you get after being 1st? 1st is 1st. Everyone wants and aims to be 1st. Is there anyone out there aiming for ZERO? Thus, i would say that it's really difficult for Ztec8cers to improve and go far after this. Unless we all come back down to earth and aim for something else, which is to develope a team of new breed that can play beautifully together as a team and not individually.

Z:Lastly, any words of encouragement to the players in Ztec?

JY:There's only TWO things that could happen to you. Number one is to let others be better than you and defeat you or number two, train harder and defeat yourself. I choose number two. What about you?

Hawks Gunned Down by Young Guns

It was the last game of the match and both teams were eager to prove a point in this final match. Ztec with the title almost in hand were going all out to reach the target set by their coach. For the hawks, they have nothing to lose and were determined to give 8cers a tough time. 8cers were with full strength welcoming back #10 Joon Han after his 2 games absence and captain #6 Oliver Cedric.

Ztec started the match sharp with their captain, Oliver being the first on the score sheet. Jo-Wyee followed soon after with an assist from Sjaiful. The hawks were launching long balls from the back towards their speedy forwards who were working out 8cers defenders all night.

However, Ztec showed why they were champions by consistently scoring with Oliver netting in more than 5 goals for the team. Moy Wei Sern was also on form netting in 3 goals, Termin scored 5, Jo-Wyee got 2 goals while Jun Wooi and Daniel each got one goal.

Minden Unihawks got themself a consolation with JJ scoring from a near range after a pass in by their national defender Christopher.

The final score was Ztec8cers 18, Minden Unihawks 1.

8cers down Innebandy! Co to Get Closer to First Div 1 Title

Ztec8cers beaten Innebandy! Co 5-2 to get closer to their first ever div 1 title. For the players in Ztec, its been already a usual sight to come so close to winning a title and ending up being second fiddle to another team. Past records shows it. 2nd last year in Div 2(losing to Dalat Eagles), 2nd this year in Labor's Day Challenge(losing to Subang Rascals). For some of the players like TerMin, Oliver, Jun Wooi, Ken Wye and Jeremy this record of being second best has haunt them even longer. Being second best in the first ever Penang League, 3rd Youthwave Challenge as well as Roger's Cup 2007.

This year, history seems not to be repeating as Ztec will play Minden Unihawks in the final game and only a scoreline of Ztec losing by 27 goals will see history repeating itself. The game will be played on 4th August 2009 at Balik Pulau Sports Complex(face off 8pm) followed by the award giving ceremony.

Ztec went into the game against Innebandy knowing a lost will dashed their hopes of being champions. The team were determine to attack early. #25 Ter Min captain for the night put the goalie into action just 1minute into play with a drag shot from the far corner. #17Jo-Wyee almost grab the lead seconds later when his volley was pushed away by #31 Linken. It didnt take long after an error by a defender gave Ztec the lead. #25 Ter Min capatalize on the defender's mistake and square the ball into the middle to the unmark #17 Jo-Wyee who calmly finish it.

Innebandy replied with an equalizer after a smooth play. The players exchanged a few passes and #6 Rooban finished it beating #80 Choon Han in the bottom corner. Ztec continue to press on missing several open goals with #16 Moy Wei Sern and #84 Hafidz getting closest to get the lead once again.

Ztec hard work were rewarded moments before the break when #31 Daniel Cheah broke free of his marker, passed the ball to #86 Jun Wooi who square the ball to an unmark #7 Ken Wye who finished the play with a marvelous goal. Ztec's sccond for the game and Ken Wye's 2nd for the league. Immediately after face off a long ball by #2 Sjaiful found #7 Ken Wye in the far corner. A pass to #86 Jun Wooi behind the post, the center calmly wrap the ball pass the goalie to make it 3-1.

2nd period started rather slow with both teams trying to control the pace of the game. #25 TerMin added Ztec's forth with a drag shot after nice runs from his forward patrner #17 Jo Wyee and a screen on the goalie by #16 Moy Wei Sern. Innebandy added another goal through #44 Sam Teoh after a miscommunication with the changes which caused a gap in the middle.

However, Ztec were not over for the night after a typical Ztec play up gave Ztec their fifth and final goal. #84 Hafidz started the play as he retrive the ball back and pass to #77 Jeremy who quickly pass to #2 Sjaiful. Sjaiful found Jo-Wyee and a quick pass to #25 Ter Min who created it back for #17 Jo-Wyee to score his 2nd for the night.

Eagles Victim of Ztec's Comeback

What a wrong time for the older Dalat Eagle players to play against a young and mature Ztec8cers who only manage a draw in their last outing against the Spartans. This match was very important to 8cers as it will determine how the young guns will deliver after their 3-3 draw nine days earlier. Will they bounce back or will they lose focus as pressure mounts up. The answer was simple. Ztec8cers bounce back mightily defeating Dalat Eagles 20-1, the biggest scoreline ever in Penang Floorball League history.

Ztec8cers came into this game 100% focus on getting their league campaign back on track. The coach knew nothing less than a win will satisfy the team and their fans so they went all out for the attack from the first whistle. It didnt take long before captain #6 Oliver manage to draw first blood on the 2nd minute. 6 minutes later, #31 Daniel Cheah grab the second. 4 more goals were scored before the half time. 2 goals from #25 Ter Min another from Oliver and an own goal.

With 6 goals in the bag, 8cers were not over for the night. They were determine to try to score more. The second period was a goal feast. A total of 15 goals were scored in the 2nd period with Dalat Eagles manage to grab a consolation through their captain Jason Selva. Jeremy Yeap did the unusual as he manage to grab a hat-trick in this game.

Below is the full statistic.

1-0 Oliver Cedric (Ter Min)
2-0 Daniel Cheah (Ter Min)
3-0 Oliver Cedric

"Lesson Learned" - ZTEC 8CERS vs Frontliners Spartans

Twas an ''interesting'' and ''phenomenal'' day, highly dramatic and full of twists just like a movie would have. Many mixed feelings, as Ztec entered the arena from negativity to bad dreams the night before. Dreams such as scoring an own goal, losing 25-o, getting injured and many more. It was the 1st time that anyone, in a long long time, has seen Ztec under perform. We went onto the court prepared for what seemed to be a match already won. That was the problem, that was the moment the downfall began. The team was overly confident and allowed their heads to grow highly out of proportion, we became arrogant, and ignorant.

The match began....

The team went all out to try and score the 1st goal, however it was mostly individuality there was no team spirit, there was no team play and no team... All of a sudden without expecting it, frontliners placed the ball in the back of our net. The team and everyone else (spectators) were dumbfounded. How could such a thing happen? How could this be, what was going on? That was the question in everyones mind. It was very obvious from that point on that the mental strenght of the players dropped drastically. That did not stop Ztec from pressing on, although we had significantly less players than the opponent, tired out, we gave it all we had. Just before the end of the 1st period we bagged an equalizer, the goal was scored by our very own ironman Sherwynd Kessler. KUDOS TO SHERWYND..! We continued to play hard but still not playing as a team, thus the end of the 1st period came.As the players walked out, it was clear to see that hearts were crushed mental dropped, anger and frustration started to kick in.We tried to figure out what was going on the coaches spoke expressing their feelings about how we should play as a unit instead of an individual, we encouraged one an other, put our hands together and with a thunderous roar gave a cheer that would lift our spirits.

The 2nd half began..

Bad positioning cost Ztec a 2 goal lead by Frontliners, forwards drifted to high up leaving the defenders no where to go and no one to pass to, all they could do was to dribble it up themselves or play in their own half. This was a smack in the head for Ztec as frontliners scored 2 goals boasting the scorline for Frontliners 3-1. Ztec needed to do something, to come up with a plan and they needed to do it fast as time was running out. Many thought it was impossible, but the Ztec's captain (Oliver) took matters into his own hands, dribbling past the players of Frontliners and scoring from distance, giving Ztec a glimmer of hope. The forwards for Ztec were still no where to be found, giving Ztec defenders a hard time. Somehow Ztec started, towards the end, to play as a team. The defenders for Ztec started passing among themselves luring Frontliners forwards to commit into stealing the ball. Then it HAPPENED!! Like the crack of the whip, a burst of lightning, faster than the mind could conceive, a counter attack was in motion, allowing Jo-Wyee to score a crucial equalizer for Ztec assisted by Oliver. Ztec tried to go for more than a draw, but it wasn't their day, luck just werent on their side. After many atempts and oppurtunities of scoring, the horn blew loud in the arena. Giving a final score of a 3-3 draw between Spartans and 8cers.

This was truly unexpected, but in everything there is a lesson to be learned, in this case, it is pride do not let pride go to your heads. If you think you are good, there is always someone better than you. Anything can happen in the game. In floorball as an individual, you wont go far, but as a team you can go the distance.

To all who are Ztec, let this soak into your hearts and into your minds, play hard and play smart and most importantly play as a TEAM. To 8cers, do not let this match keep you down, instead let it be a reminder that we need one and other out there. Be encouraged, for we are proud of you, we will make a comeback in our next game, lets make sure of that. We will roar louder, we will fight harder, and we will give our opponents a game to remember.

The definition of a Juggernaut is this:
1. Unstoppable, crushing all in its path.
2. A collective team or group working as one

Ztec 8cers, You are JUGGERNAUTS...So play like one..! 1...2...Whoossh!!

''Over The Ant Hill'' Contact Fireants VS Ztec 8cers

Upon arrival at the arena, 8cers walked in together full of confidence, motivated with high spirits, with the urge to get the game going, ready for battle. Thus, warm ups began. With a few passes followed by warm up drills the team prepared their minds and their bodies for what might have been one of the most grueling and demanding matches to date.

So it begins...The whistle blows...The team huddles up...

The coaches gave some last minute words of encouragement and reminders of tactical play ups as well as strategies. Hands held high as one team, and with a thundering roar....WHOOSHH!!

The game starts...

It has been a custom for Ztec as whole to start a match at a very slow pace. It has happened many times, noticed by many people, but the tables have turned. Ztec started with a burst of energy, fast as lightning, the sleeping lion has awakened, bagging 2 goals in the 1st minute. An awesome start from Ztec and goals by Jo-Wyee and Ter Min. After much celebration, the game resumes.

The pace of the game and the game itself was controlled by Ztec from that point on, leaving Contact rendered. However players from Contact fought back amazingly giving Ztec a very physical and demanding game. That shows the respect both teams have for each by going all out. Good job Contact Fireants!! Unfortunately, Ztec speed and agility outplayed the opponents. Still in the 1st period of the match, Ztec scored 2 more goals, one from Jo-Wyee and a volley from Oliver assisted by Jeremy who took a shot from half court.

8cers' line 2 did an amazing job at defending and sticking with their opponents giving them a tough time of scoring. Sjaiful, Hafidz, and Daniel Cheah controlled the game from the back, waiting for oppurtunities to play the ball up. Upon receving the oppurtunity line 2 burst and countered their opponents but were unable to put in the ball at the back of the net. Moy, Ken Wye and Sherwynd gave their all at retreaving the ball and trying to score and that is what the coaches want to see, the heart and the determination.

Contact managed to score a goal, however it was disallowed by the referees due to a foul commited the shot was taken and the whistle being blown. Kudos to Contact for trying.

2nd Half..!!

After some words by the coaches and senior players, Ztec was all pumped up with their minds ready and the hearts wanting the win. It was Ztec 8cers objective to score 7 goals that night. And managed to do so. Jo-Wyee being the rebounder followed the game plan and played high up in the opponents court, with that managing to score 2 more goals assisted by Ter Min for the team. Apart from that, the night wasn't over. We knew we could at least salvage one more...AND WE DID. A tremendous solo effort by Jun Wooi placed the ball in the goal. And there you have it, 7 goals scored just as we planned. All play ups and free hits were pre-planned and carried out to perfection. Kudos to ''The Merdeka'', although not a goal, left the opponents dumbfounded and lost for a split second, almost conceiding another goal, but only managed to hit the side netting.

Looking forward for more...!!

To all players, great job and great effort!! To the KL players who came down specially to play we owe you a great deal of thanks. Cant wait to play again. To Adrian, Jack and Teik Hong and everyone who helped, terima kasih banyak-banyak. To ZTEC supporters, although few and limited sound levels, we appreciat your presents there. We played for you, we played for ourselves, and we played for ZTEC. One...Two...WHOOSHH!!

Division 1 is upon us, whether were ready or not. I say, WE ARE!! To all guys and girls of ZTEC this is the time that we pull our strength together as one, joining each other as a team to play, compete, or even to cheer. We are stepping onto the court with our heads held high, with our spirits unbreakable, going all out with full force with no holding back.

This is our time! So lets take it! So lets do what we have trained for all this while. Lets do what we do best. Lets Play FLOORBALL!!

In the past year, ever since ZTEC played in division 2 in 2008, We have trained harder, we have trained smarter, we have beaten all odds, achieved success that some only can dream about, but apart from all that we learnt to play as a TEAM. We Are a team, on & off the court. THAT IS THE SPIRIT OF ZTEC!! That is what we were striving for and we achieved it. Keep it up!

To 8CERS, no matter what happens, keep UNITED. We run as one and we play as one!! We are not perfect as individuals, but as a team perfection is found.

We are gonna rip the court up, every shed of blood, sweat and tears, it does not matter, because it is all worth it. So play hard, play smart. Why?? BECAUSE WE CAN!!
Let's go out there and show them what we've got and what were made of !!

Final Friendly - They Drew First Blood

Ztec8cers played their last friendly match before their division 1 campaign kicks off this coming 16th of June. They played Frontliners Spartans whom they will play again in 3 weeks time but this time it will be in the league and it will surely promise to be a more exciting encounter.

The friendly was played in Balik Pulau Sports Complex, the venue of the upcoming division 1. This time only 2 periods were played as the team wanted to test how it feels to play with just 2 period. Face off! It was the Spartans who drew first blood after just 2 minutes of play. However it was not over for 8cers. 8cers hit back 5 goals without return before the end of the first period through goals by #25 Termin, #6 Oliver, #4 Sherwynd and a brace from #7 Ken Wye.

In the second period, both teams played pretty fast floorball with lots of counter attack and hard defending. After much action which is hard to describe in words the score was 12-1 with 2 minutes remaining. Spartans manage to hit in one back with a minute left on the clock. 8cers were determine not to allow Spartans to score the final goal and after a few passes, #86 Jun Wooi found the back of the net with a long range drag. The final score 13-2 to 8cers.

Ztec8cers will next play Contact Fireants on the 16th of June.(8pm face off)

Last but not least, Ztec8cers would like to thank the manager of Frontliners, Jason Chan, the whole frontliners team, the referees, Linken and Kenny as well as all the Ztec players who were there to make this friendly a success.
